BFT welding and fabrication work in Austin typically runs $275 – $650 for most bracket repairs, hinge rebuilds, and gate frame fixes, with full custom fabrication jobs starting around $800. We stock common BFT-compatible steel on our trucks and can usually weld a cracked gate frame or fabricate a new bracket same day. Most Austin owners discover the problem the hard way: a gate that starts sagging, dragging, or making a grinding sound where metal meets metal.
What we’re talking about here is the structural metalwork that holds a BFT operator and gate together: the mounting brackets, hinge plates, gate frame sections, and steel posts the operator bolts to. When that metal fatigues, cracks, or corrodes, the operator can’t do its job no matter how well the electronics are working. Dean Prescott has seen more than a few Austin gates where the BFT motor was fine, but the steel beneath it had given up.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
Our welding and fabrication work covers the full BFT swing and slide gate lineup we service in Austin: the Aries, Deimos, Phobos, and Rigel swing operators, plus the sliding gate models. The welding needs differ between them. A BFT Aries on a heavy ornamental steel gate puts real stress on its mounting plate, so that’s usually where cracks appear first. A Deimos on a lighter tube-steel gate more often needs hinge or frame repair.
Before we weld anything, we identify what we’re working with. BFT operators have a data plate on the motor housing with the model and serial number. The gate itself is a different story. If it was custom-built, there’s no model number, just measurements: steel gauge, tubing diameter, and the condition of the existing welds. For brackets and plates, we match the bolt pattern to the BFT operator’s mounting holes and fabricate accordingly.
The OEM-vs-aftermarket decision matters here. BFT sells its own mounting hardware and brackets, and when the customer wants factory parts, we order them. But for most structural work, quality aftermarket steel is as good or better: we use A36 structural plate and tube, cut and welded to match the original dimensions. The steel doesn’t know whose label is on it. What matters is the weld quality, the material thickness, and the fit.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the hinge end. The weld at the hinge plate or the hinge barrel itself has started to pull. Metal fatigue usually starts as a hairline crack you can’t see until the gate leans enough to scrape the ground.
- The operator mounting plate flexes or rocks when the gate moves. The steel plate bolted to the concrete pad or the gate post has loosened because the weld or the anchor points have failed. A flexing plate misaligns the operator arm and wears out the internal gears.
- A grinding or squealing noise from the hinge area. That’s metal on metal after a weld has broken. The gate is no longer pivoting cleanly, and every cycle is making the damage worse.
- Rust stains or flaking paint near a joint. In Austin’s humidity and occasional hard rain, a failed weld lets moisture into the joint. The rust trails are a tell that the structural metal underneath is compromised.
- The gate frame itself has a visible crack. On ornamental steel gates, cracks usually start at a miter joint or where a decorative scroll was welded. Texas heat cycling expands and contracts that steel every day, and weak welds let go after a few summers.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what you can expect to pay in the Austin market, based on the work we do regularly:
- Bracket fabrication and reinstall: $275 – $450, including new steel plate cut and drilled to the BFT bolt pattern, welding, and paint or corrosion treatment.
- Hinge plate repair or replacement: $300 – $550, depending on hinge size and whether the gate needs to be lifted off its post for the work.
- Gate frame crack repair: $200 – $500 per crack, including grinding, weld prep, and structural stitching.
- Full custom fabrication (gate frame section, new post, or mount reinforcement): $800 and up, quoted after we measure and discuss the plan.
Every quote is written out before we strike an arc. You’ll see the steel cost, the labor, and the total. It’s a Kingswell Guarantee requirement: the price is on paper before any work starts, and the repair itself carries a written 365-day guarantee. If a weld we did fails inside that year, we come back and fix it free. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, stamped on every invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check for visible cracks, wiggle the gate to see if a bracket is loose, and look for rust trails around welds. That kind of inspection is safe and useful. You should not attempt welding on a gate that carries a BFT operator. A gate under power can store energy in its frame and springs. Welding on a live or improperly supported structure can cause the gate to shift suddenly, and a hot weld near operator wiring or a capacitor can damage electronics or start a fire. The gate needs to be safely blocked or lifted, and the operator needs to be disconnected at the breaker before any welding happens.
If you’ve found a crack or a sagging hinge, call us at (254) 280-0629. We’ll come out, assess it, and give you a written number before any work begins. Dean’s rule applies: tell us what it’s doing wrong, and we’ll tell you what it costs to fix.
FAQs
Quality welding on a properly prepped gate frame lasts 10 – 20 years in Austin’s climate, though the paint or coating usually needs attention before the weld itself fails. The real wear point is any bracket subject to daily flex from the operator cycling, which is why we reinforce those mounts beyond the original design when we fabricate a replacement. Call (254) 280-0629 and we’ll tell you what your specific gate needs.
Yes, most single crack repairs are straightforward: we grind out the failed weld, prep the steel, and lay a new weld that’s as strong or stronger than the original. The exception is when the surrounding steel is too thin or rusted to hold a weld, and then replacement is the honest call. We’ll show you the problem before we recommend either path.
Most bracket fabrications and single crack repairs take 2 – 4 hours on site, including cleanup and paint. A full gate removal for hinge work or a custom frame section can run a half day to a full day. We’ll give you a real arrival window and a completion estimate before the job starts, and we leave the site cleaner than we found it.
We carry common plate stock, tube steel, and angle in the sizes most Austin gates use, so a bracket repair usually doesn’t wait on materials. If your project needs a specific BFT factory part, we order it and schedule the install when it arrives. We keep parts on hand for the BFT lineup plus LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and the other brands we service.
Portcullis Gate Repair Austin is an independent service provider and not affiliated with BFT. We service and weld for BFT systems every week, but we’re not a factory operation. That independence means we tell you the truth about what needs fixing and what doesn’t, and the work is backed by the same Kingswell Guarantee we put on every job since 2008.
