A Linear keypad or intercom that’s stopped talking to your gate operator usually needs either a new keypad, a replacement intercom board, or fresh wiring between the two. In Austin, we typically install Linear-compatible keypad and intercom repairs for $240 – $520 parts and labor, and we carry the common Linear parts on the truck so most calls are finished the same visit. The way most homeowners find out is quiet and unremarkable: the keypad still beeps, the intercom still hums, but the gate just sits there. That’s the failure pattern we see most in this part of Texas.
Dean Prescott has been sorting out Linear keypad and intercom failures across Austin since well before the current housing boom. Tell me what it’s doing wrong, and I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it – before I pull out a single tool. That’s how we start every diagnostic call.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear’s security and access line covers a lot of ground, but the keypads and intercoms we repair in Austin cluster around a handful of familiar models. The AK-11 and AK-15 exterior keypads are still the most common on residential gates, usually paired with an APeX or MegaCode receiver. On the intercom side, the AE-500, AE-1000, and the older AM-KP series show up on driveways in Tarrytown, Circle C, and out toward Dripping Springs. Each runs on its own wiring convention, and matching a new part to the wrong generation is the single most common mistake we correct after a DIY attempt.
Linear parts are not all backward-compatible, and that’s the gotcha worth knowing. A keypad from the MegaCode era won’t always talk to an older Multi-Code receiver without a separate adapter, and some AE-series intercom boards need a matching door station to operate at all. We identify the right part by the model sticker on the back of the keypad faceplate or the board inside the intercom housing, not by the shape of the plastic. OEM Linear replacements run more than quality aftermarket equivalents, but for intercom boards specifically, we stick with OEM or known-good rebuilds because the aftermarket boards have a shorter real-world lifespan in Texas humidity. If we can’t read the label, we don’t guess.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad beeps but the gate won’t move. The keypad’s membrane is sending a signal, but the relay on the circuit board isn’t closing. This is the classic board-level failure on the AK-11 after a few years of sun and rain exposure.
- Some buttons work, others need a hard press or won’t register. The carbon contacts under the rubber membrane wear unevenly. The number 2, 5, and 8 keys usually go first because those get the most use in Austin gate codes.
- Intercom audio is faint, crackly, or one-way. The speaker and microphone on the door station share a small amplifier section. When that degrades, you’ll hear the visitor but they can’t hear you, or the audio drops to a whisper.
- Gate opens on its own after rain or heavy humidity. Moisture intrusion into the keypad housing is causing a phantom short across the trigger circuit. We see this pattern after the spring storm season, particularly on gates that face east and catch the morning damp.
- Keypad backlight stays on or flickers. The LED driver circuit is failing, which usually means the main board is drawing power incorrectly and is on its way out. It’ll work for a while, then quit entirely, usually at the worst time.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Linear keypad replacement in Austin, expect $240 – $380 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping in a standard AK-11 or a vandal-resistant AK-15 with the metal faceplate. A Linear intercom board or full intercom station replacement runs $320 – $520 installed, with the range driven by whether the door station wiring can be reused or needs a fresh home run to the operator. Every price we quote includes the part, the labor, the wiring check, and the programming.
You get the price in writing before we turn a single screw, and that price doesn’t change unless we find something genuinely broken that you and we agree needs attention. The repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the keypad or intercom fails inside a year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it’s stamped on every invoice we leave.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of checks an Austin homeowner can safely do before calling us. Make sure the keypad has power, that the breaker for the gate operator hasn’t tripped, and that the wiring terminals on the back of the keypad aren’t visibly corroded or loose. Those three things account for maybe one call in ten. The rest of what we see is board-level failure, relay failure, or wiring damage inside the conduit, and opening up a Linear intercom housing to probe a board with a multimeter is work for someone who’s done it a few hundred times. The boards run on 12 – 24 volts AC, so there’s a low-voltage shock risk and a high-voltage confusion risk if the operator’s main terminals get probed by mistake.
If you’d rather not spend a Saturday squinting at a circuit diagram, call us at (254) 280-0629. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a keypad swap or an intercom board replacement, and what kind of price range you’re looking at, before anyone rolls a truck.
FAQs
In Austin’s sun and humidity, expect 5 – 8 years from a Linear keypad and 7 – 10 from an intercom board, though east-facing installations in full afternoon sun often fail a couple of years sooner.
For keypads, no, the membrane and board are sealed as one unit, and a failed board means a new keypad. Intercom boards can sometimes be repaired if the failure is a single component, but the economics usually favor a known-good replacement with a one-year warranty. Call (254) 280-0629 and we’ll tell you straight which way your unit falls.
Most keypad swaps are done in under an hour including programming. A full intercom station replacement can take two to three hours if the door station wiring needs rerunning. We book these during a real arrival window, not a four-hour “sometime” range.
We stock AK-11 and AK-15 keypads, common MegaCode receivers, and the most replaced AE-series intercom boards as standard truck inventory. If your model needs a special-order part, we tell you that on the phone before the visit and give you the lead time.
